The Memphis Sound….elusive,
nostalgic, contemporary, indefinable.
The only way you can pin it down is just
DO IT!"
--Liz Lottmann
Over a 35-year career, Liz
Lottmann’s brassy, sassy,
high-energy blues and jazz
performances have earned
her the respect of
musicians and audiences
alike. She has toured
through the blues and jazz
clubs of the U.S., Europe,
Japan, South and Central
America and Canada. While
touring with her own
bands, she also frequently
sang with Donn McMinn’s

Liz is proud to be born-and-raised in Northeast
Arkansas. While still in high school there, she
began composing and performing her own special
brand of “barbed-wire” folk. She was a solo
artist at Memphis coffeehouses and soon
attracted the attention of Judd Phillips, who
produced an album of her original songs at Sun
Studios in midtown Memphis. As a matter of fact,
Liz is the only female singer/songwriter who
ever recorded under contract with Sam Phillips
and Knox Music Publishing. When Jerry Lee Lewis
heard her first recordings, he encouraged her to
reach out toward the blues. At that time, Furry
Lewis, the legendary “country bluesman,” was
working the Memphis area, and each time they’d
run into each other, Liz pestered him to show her
Photo by Grady Jim Robinson a few licks
on guitar. Furry’s brief lessons allowed her to
glimpse the back-
backbone of the blues, and she’s never lost
sight of it.
Liz’s newest project centers around her new CD,
“Memphis Revisited.” She has cherry-picked some
of the most seasoned musicians in the Northwest
Arkansas area to present the Memphis-style
rhythm & blue tunes on “Memphis Revisited.” The
exciting 11-piece band consists of a full rhythm
section, and the extraordinary Kick-Ass Brass (a
5-piece horn section).
MEMPHIS MAYHEM players are: Liz Lottmann
(vocals), Paul Hughes (guitar), Darren Novotny
(drums), Kenny Case (bass), Dave Ervin (keys),
Jurgen Lottman (percussion), Jules Taylor
(backup vocals), and KickAss Brass featuring
Stan Adelman (trombone), Larry Cangelosi (sax),
Tony Childs (sax/clarinet), and Keith Wood
(trumpet).
“Memphis Revisited” was recorded at Fireside
Studio in Nashville with her old friends Jeff
Davis and Billy Earheart, and other members of
the Amazing Rhythm Aces. Liz was joined by Ben
Cauley, of the Bar-Kays, to cover a Bar-Kays
song on the project. After recording, it was
mastered at Sun Records Studio in Memphis. Liz
feels that these sessions with musicians of this
high caliber are some of her greatest music
experiences.
Liz and her brother, Andy McClish, have
established Ginnin’ Cotton Records based out of
Northwest Arkansas. The name was chosen because
as children, they both picked cotton in the
fields at Black Oak, Arkansas, and they remember
what back-breaking work that was. They know it’s
going to be hard work to produce and distribute
independent music, but their hard work has
already resulted in releasing two CDs since
January 2004: Liz’s “Memphis Revisited” and The
Bama Band’s latest CD, “Beale Street Boogie.”
Memphis Blues Revue, whose players included Jeff
“Stick” Davis and Billy Earheart of The Amazing
Rhythm Aces, and Willie Hall of The Blues
Brothers. She has shared the stage and jammed
with artists such as Taj Mahal, The Nighthawks,
ZZ Top, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Dizzy Gillespie,
George Benson, and Spyro Gyra.
